Join Us for the Tegeder-Berg Society Spring Event: Examining the History of Racial Covenants in Central Minnesota

The History Department is excited to invite you to our annual Tegeder-Berg Society Spring Event, where we explore the importance of studying the past and provide a unique opportunity for CSB and SJU alumni to reconnect, network, and mentor current and future students.
This year’s event will focus on the history of racial covenants in Central Minnesota. In the early 20th century, racially restrictive covenants were inserted into property deeds to prevent non-white people from owning or occupying land. These practices have had long-lasting effects on access to generational wealth, education, health, and many other aspects of life.

Dr. Brittany Merritt Nash and Dr. Shannon Smith, along with current and former students, will share their research into the language, locations, and lasting consequences of these racial covenants. Their work sheds light on how past racial discrimination continues to shape our communities today, both locally and nationally.

We invite you to be a part of this important conversation and explore how the study of history can help us understand the present.
